Why Salema Eco Camp Is a Hidden Gem for Families in the Algarve
If you’re anything like me, you're always on the lookout for places that tick all the boxes—somewhere the kids can run wild, where you can sip your coffee in peace, and ideally, where there's actual shade (seriously, why is that so rare in the Algarve?). Well, I think I’ve found it. It’s called Salema Eco Camp, and I honestly wish I’d discovered it sooner.
A Little Slice of Family Paradise
Tucked between Lagos and Sagres in the South Algarve, Salema Eco Camp feels like one of those “if you know, you know” kind of places. It’s a campsite, yes—but hear me out, it’s not your average tent-and-sandwich kind of situation. It’s got this lovely laid-back vibe, loads of trees (praise be!), and a brilliant wooden playground that my kids immediately made their kingdom.
Even better? You don’t have to be staying there to enjoy it. We weren’t—we just popped in to check it out and ended up spending half the day there.
Coffee for You, Climbing Frames for Them
You know that rare moment of bliss when the kids are totally absorbed in play and you get to sit down with a hot drink while it's still hot? That happened here. The playground is just a few steps from the camp’s restaurant terrace, so you can actually sit and enjoy a homemade juice or coffee while still having eyes on the little ones. It’s shady, breezy, and honestly felt like such a break from the usual madness of holiday outings.
My toddler loved the climbing logs and little nooks to explore, and because it's all surrounded by trees, it wasn’t too hot even in the middle of the day. If you’ve got a baby or a toddler, definitely pin this place—it’s a bit of a unicorn when it comes to shady spots in the Algarve.
“The food is fresh, local, and has those kind of “I feel healthier just by looking at this” vibes.”
The Food (You’ll Want the Moussaka, Trust Me)
Okay, let's talk food—because if there’s one thing that really wins me over, it’s a good meal after wrangling small humans all morning. The on-site restaurant is so good. It’s called Nazari and the food is fresh, local, and has those kind of “I feel healthier just by looking at this” vibes.
I had the moussaka, and I’m not even going to pretend I didn’t consider ordering a second one. It was just the right mix of comforting and packed with flavour. And there were loads of veggie and vegan options too, if that’s your thing.
It’s Not Just a Campground – It’s a Whole Vibe
This place isn’t only about camping. Sure, they’ve got eco-accommodation (like glamping tents and little studios), but what really makes it special is the atmosphere. It feels like a little community tucked into the hills, with space for kids to roam and parents to exhale.
They also run events for the public—things like outdoor concerts and kids’ workshops. I’d definitely recommend checking their socials before you go, because you might time it perfectly with a live music night or something crafty for the kids. It’s those unexpected extras that make your holiday feel magical, isn’t it?
Final Parent-to-Parent Thoughts
If you're travelling through the Algarve with kids—especially little ones—Salema Eco Camp is such a lovely, low-key stop. Whether you're staying nearby in Lagos or Sagres, or just need a family-friendly place for lunch and a play, it’s 100% worth the short drive.
It’s calm. It’s shady. It’s full of happy little noises from children running barefoot. And you can sit there, under the trees, with a really decent coffee and think, yep, this is the kind of holiday I needed.
So yeah, save it. You’re welcome.
