🌙 What Is Até à Lua
Até à Lua (which means "to the moon" in Portuguese) is a children's bookshop run by Joana and Nuno, a super friendly Portuguese couple who have a child themselves. They don't just sell books. The shop is a curated mix of beautiful children's books in multiple languages, toys, barefoot shoes, board games and carefully chosen gifts.
Walking in feels like entering a small world designed with love and attention. Everything is thoughtfully selected and you can feel that Joana and Nuno genuinely care about what they stock. It's the opposite of a generic tourist shop.
✨ More Than a Shop
What makes Até à Lua truly special is that it's more than a retail space. Joana and Nuno organise regular events for families: storytelling sessions, workshops and in summer even little excursions. They once took a group to the local donkey farm Quinta do Barco Cheio, where families spent a morning brushing and cuddling the donkeys at Orelhas Sem Fronteiras.
These kinds of community experiences are rare and precious, especially if you're an expat family still building your social circle in the Algarve. Até à Lua is a hub where you can meet other parents. Also many Portuguese families are regular visitors here.

Kids love the play area and the shop. There's enough to look at and touch that they stay engaged without you having to rush through. The books range from board books for babies to chapter books for older children, in Portuguese.
If you're looking for a meaningful souvenir or gift, this is the place. A Portuguese children's book is something different than the next fridge magnet. But nothing against a cool fridge magnets, I love them as well!
