Lagos Old Town: A Family Guide to the Most Charming Town in the Algarve

We probably walk through Lagos old town once a week, and it never gets boring. There is always something new to discover, a street musician playing, a new café to try, or just that feeling of wandering through beautiful cobblestone streets while the kids run ahead and find things to explore.

Lagos old town is one of those places that works for everyone. Parents get charming cafés and beautiful architecture. Kids get ice cream and street performers. Everybody wins.

🎵 What Makes It Special

The old town has a magic that is hard to describe but impossible to miss. The narrow streets are lined with colourful buildings, the squares open up into sunny spaces with cafés, and there is almost always live street music somewhere. We especially love the violinist Nesha and cellist Julio Luz, who play in different spots around town.

Our son always asks to stop at the charming Jubilo carousel for a ride. And we nearly always end up at Crema di Gelato for ice cream. These little rituals are what make a place feel like home.

🍽️ Our Favourite Spots in the Old Town

We have tested a lot of places over the past year. Here are our go-to spots:

Food:Da Selva Açaí (best açaí bowls), All Things Dough (best bakery), Delicias (best pastel de nata), Gelicia (best artisan ice cream), Crema di Gelato (best ice cream for kids)

Family:O Ninho (family bar with play area), Até à Lua (children's bookshop), Arco Preloved (secondhand kids' clothes and Mama Lounge)

Coffee: Goji Lounge Café, Kestè (near Porto de Mós)

👶🏻 Walking with Kids

The old town is compact and mostly pedestrianised. You can cover the highlights in an hour, or spend a full morning exploring at a leisurely pace. The cobblestones are manageable with a stroller, though a baby carrier is easier for the narrower streets.

There are enough stops along the way (cafés, ice cream, the carousel, shops) that kids never have to walk for too long before the next interesting thing appears. And for the Rainy Days? - klick here.

🅿️ Parking

If you are not walking in from your accommodation, the best parking options are Parque de Estacionamento (multi-storey, central) or Parque da Frente Ribeirinha (near the waterfront). Both are a few minutes walk from the pedestrian streets.
