Praia da Luz: One of the Best Family Beaches Near Lagos
Praia da Luz is one of those beaches that just works for families. A wide stretch of sand, a charming village behind it, restaurants within walking distance, and at low tide it becomes one of the safest and most enjoyable beaches for toddlers in the entire Algarve.
It is about 10 minutes drive from Lagos and one of our go-to beaches, though in summer it is reaaally crowded.
🌊 The Beach
Praia da Luz is a long, wide sandy beach backed by the village. The sand is soft, the water is clear, and on calm days it is genuinely beautiful.
When the water pulls back at low tide, the shallow areas become incredibly flat and calm. Toddlers can paddle and splash in water that barely reaches their knees. It is one of the safest swimming conditions you will find on this stretch of coast.
Check the tides before you go. This is essential for Praia da Luz. At high tide the beach is narrower and the water is deeper and less suitable for very young children. At low tide it transforms into a toddler paradise at the moment (May 2026). But it‘s still lovely at high tide as well.
The swings
The swings on the beach are not just a few sad swings, it‘s THE meeting point of all local families and the kids love them.
🅿️ Parking
Parking is easy in winter, in summer the carpark right at the beach is most of the time full. But there are several options along the road behind the beach and in the village. Even in summer you can usually find a spot without too much stress, sometimes it‘s best to just wait for a couple of minutes until someone drives away.
🍽️ Eating Near the Beach
The village of Luz has some lovely family-friendly spots:
Endless Summer Beach Bar - Right on the promenade. Perfect for drinks and Pizza or Burger and they have healthy ice cream.
Boaty's - Tapas, which are incredibly good but a bit pricey. Great for lunch or dinner before, in between, or after a beach day. We love it.
Licks Gelato - Our ice cream pick if we are not eating the healthy ones from Endless Summer. Licks has all the toppings and some special flavours.
👶🏻 With Kids
Praia da Luz is practical for families. The beach is wide enough that you can set up camp without being on top of other families. There are lifeguards in season. There is a beautiful promenade right next to the beach, so you can pop to a café or a shop without driving.
For older kids, the rocks at the edges of the beach are fun to explore.
✨ Insider Tips
Low tide is everything. Seriously, check the tide times. Best for little kids at low tide.
Combine with Kinoah. Breakfast at Kinoah, then down to the beach. That is a perfect Luz morning and what we are doing veeeery often. 😅
Avoid peak hours in summer. Between 12pm and 3pm the beach gets busy and hot. Morning or late afternoon sessions are ideal with kids.
Fishermen's Trail. If you are feeling adventurous, the walk along the cliff trail from Lagos (Porto de Mós) to Luz or the other way around is beautiful at sunset (with little kids in the carrier or in the Kraxe or with older kids who are strong walkers).
