O Refúgio: A Hidden Farm Just Outside Lagos Where Kids Pick Their Own Fruits And Veggies

Just a few minutes' drive from the centre of Lagos, there's this beautiful place: O Refúgio is a small, peaceful farm where families can pick their own fruits and vegetables straight from the field. Pumpkins, tomatoes, melons, and whatever else is growing that season.

It's one of those experiences that kids absolutely love and that parents secretly enjoy even more. There's something deeply satisfying about watching your toddler carefully pick a tomato off a vine, inspect it from every angle, and then proudly carry it around like they've found treasure.

🥕 What You Can Do

The concept is beautifully simple: you arrive, explore the land, and pick whatever's in season. The available produce changes throughout the year. In autumn there are pumpkins everywhere (they host special pumpkin picking events around October 🎃). In late summer you'll find tomatoes, melons, and other seasonal gems.

Family picnic under an olive tree at O Refugio farm near Lagos Algarve

After picking, you can enjoy a cozy little picnic under the trees 🧺. The land is spacious, green, and peaceful. Bring a blanket and the food! The farm has that beautiful countryside feeling that's so close to Lagos yet feels miles away from everything.

👶🏻 Why Kids Love It

This is hands on nature at its best. Kids get to dig in the dirt, pick real vegetables, explore the fields, and see where food actually comes from. It's educational without ever feeling like a lesson. Hust pure countryside fun.

The land is quite safe and spacious, so you don't need to hover anxiously. Toddlers can wander and explore, older kids can run ahead and find the biggest pumpkin.

For us, it was also a lovely contrast to the typical beach day routine.

✨ About the Owner

You can tell she genuinely loves sharing this place with families, and that warmth makes the whole experience feel special.

O Refúgio combines beautifully with other countryside spots near Lagos. Visit the farm in the morning, then head to Casa Chico Zé for a traditional Portuguese lunch (also just outside Lagos). Or pair it with a visit to Vinha Velha Farm for a full countryside day before returning to the coast for an afternoon beach session.

It also works as a lovely morning activity before heading to Bahia Beach Bar at Meia Praia for lunch. Farm in the morning, beach bar in the afternoon. Balance.
